What are the functions of phosphate ester flame retardants?

1. Endothermic effect

Its function is to slow down the heating rate of polymer materials. For example, borax has 10 molecules of crystal water, and the released crystal water absorbs 141.8 kJ/mol of heat. Therefore, its heat absorption suppresses the temperature rise of the material and produces a flame retardant effect. The flame retardant effect of hydrated alumina is also due to the endothermic effect caused by thermal dehydration. In addition, some molten droplets often produced due to the decomposition of thermoplastic polymers can leave the combustion zone and take away the heat of reaction, thus achieving a certain flame retardant effect.

2. Coverage effect

The function of phosphate ester flame retardants is to form a stable coating at higher temperatures, or decompose to form foam-like substances that cover the surface of polymer materials, making it difficult for the polymer materials to escape the flammable gases generated by thermal decomposition, which is harmful to the materials. It plays the role of heat insulation and air isolation, inhibits the decomposition of materials, and achieves flame retardant effect. Phosphate ester compounds and fire-retardant foam coatings work through this mechanism.

3. Dilution effect

The thermal decomposition of phosphate ester flame retardants with this function will produce a large amount of non-flammable gases. The flammable gases generated by the decomposition of polymer materials and the oxygen in the air are diluted and cannot reach the flammable concentration range, preventing the polymer materials from catching fire and burning. Diluting gases include co, NH, HCI, ho, etc. Heating ammonium phosphate, ammonium chloride, ammonium carbonate, etc. will produce this non-flammable gas.
